First of all, I love the camera when it works. Short on features and not digital quality, but top of the line picture quality for 8mm. Has clear, white whites and sharp picture. It's also very easy to use.

However, after just 4 months of use, the camera started not keeping a charge. I discovered the problem to be that the camera would go into play mode on it's own from the off position and drain the battery. (Switch remains locked in the off position, but camera is on and able to play tapes)I was also unable to charge the battery for the same reason.(Battery will not charge while in play mode even though plugged in)

The Sony warranty had expired (They have a very short warranty period) but I had purchased an extended warranty so my camera was relpaced.

Now, my replacement camera is exibiting the same problem. I would greatly discourage buying this camera... this problem renders the camera virtually useless.

I have discovered this is a known problem on other Sony Handycams...

I bought this camera 3 months ago. It's great to have it 2nd-hand... It is easy to use, stable, small enough to carry with convenience. I have focussed on the mid-noon sun with maximum exposure and everything turned dark after that but after a few hours of rest, it could work properly like before. One thing I don't like is that you need a tripod when in closest zoom-in because you can never have steady hands to keep the picture not shaking. It does not have an LCD so you have to keep your eye on the color viewfinder. However, it's worth what it is. With [the money spent], I can't expect to get any greater camera. So it's a good job for less and I am happy with it. If you have more money, better buy a more modern model which has LCD for example.

I found the Sony CCD-TR517 to be nice to my checking account and nice to me. I found it easy to set up and use.

I purchased this camcorder a few weeks ago. I wanted a high-quality, up-to-date camcorder, but was not interested in paying over five hundred dollars for digital. It is extremely easy to use, and is high quality. I have never used a camcorder before, and this took me just a few minutes to learn. I have had no problems with it to date. The sound quality is wonderful when you play it back on the TV. If you are looking for the Sony brand, and don't care about not having all the extras, then this camcorder is for you.

Pros: durable, small, light, and easy to use.

Cons: no LCD screen, no image stabilizer

"You get what you pay for :-)" 2009-12-29

Recently I purchased the DXG-569VK. I only paid US$59 so I figured that even if the cam only recorded with average output, I would be happy. I can say, at least in the HD mode, the video cam outperforms my expectations. There is a short learning curve to mastering the controls but if you give yourself about 15 minutes to play with the device, you will have all the "bells and whistles" under control. As a still camera, it is all but useless. As other reviewers have noted, the stills are blurry and not really useful. However, I have yet to use a "video" camera that shoots great stills. You either get "stills" or "video" in a camera....very seldom do you get both with superior quality unless you are spending a lot more money and buying up toward the "pro-sumer" end. This is, after all, a VIDEO camera so I wasn't expecting that much from the stills.

There are two problems that need to be mentioned however. First, the camera DOES NOT accept class 6 SDHC cards. Even though the camera info and web advertisement says it DOES accept SDHC cards, it does not accept class 6 cards. There is a possibility that it may accept class 4 or lower SDHC cards but I have my doubts. I was about to return the camera (without reading the external cards the camera is useless because it only has 32MB onboard) but decided to buy and try an earlier version of the SD card. I bought and installed a 2 Gig regular SD card and the camera read and recorded to it flawlessly. So, before you go out and buy a SDHC card (I bought a 16 Gig, class 6 and learned the hard way) try an old regular SD card first or maybe a class 4 SDHC card to see if it works before spending some serious cash on the latest and greatest SDHC card which will NOT work with this video camera.

Also, I went on the DXG site and left a message for customer service regarding the SD card issue. That was about 3 days ago and I have yet to hear from them. So far, I have to rate their customer service with a big fat "ZERO". Basically I figured out the memory card issue myself and I am still waiting to find out if there is a workaround for the SDHC cards. I seriously doubt it because I think it would require a firmware upgrade.

Other than the two above issues, the camera does record in 720HD that is very acceptable. You get what you pay for and for $50 bucks, I can't complain. The camera is made of a very cheap, flimsy plastic. On the other hand, the model I have is a nice looking black issue and is extremely lightweight. The 3 inch screen is remarkable (once again, considering the price point)and the audio is clear and crisp on playback.

All in all, you won't be disappointed with this video camera as a basic little HD video recorder. Expect $50 bucks worth and you will easily get $100 worth of camera. :-)))

Update...December 30th, 5 pm. PST

I received a note from the DXG support staff today..4 days after my initial inquiry, not counting the holidays. The support agent stated in the note that the DXG could only use CLASS 2 SDHC cards up to 4 Gigs. I had bought a CLASS 6 SDHC card, 16 Gig and the camera could not read it. So, if you buy this camera, be aware that it will accept only SDHC cards that are CLASS 2 and up to 4 Gigs. The good thing about this is that the CLASS 2 cards are the cheapest of the lot on the market right now. The bad thing is.....the CLASS 2 cards will be phased out at some point and you will have a useless camera. So do yourself a favor and buy 2 or 3 of the CLASS 2 cards now...and they are cheap....and you will be all set. Once again, a great little HD camera for the price. Since the camera will only record up to 2 Gigs on one recording, there is really no need to buy the larger cards anyway....a 4 Gig card should work fine with enough room for two full 2 Gig recordings.

The video quality is good, but I was hoping to use it for still pictures as well. All the still pictures are blurry. I have had trouble with the record button not making connection when the batteries are getting low.

The DXG-569VK HI-DEF camcorder was quite simply the worst camera purchase I have ever made. Amazon's service was terrific as usual, but this product is just inferior in every conceivable way. Poor construction, incomprehensible instructions, you name it. Even when I followed the instructions line by line and letter by letter the camera did not perform consistently. Even after some 12 hours of struggling and frustration I was never able to actually shoot Hi-Def videos. I own many other video cameras and do video contract work, so this is not a novice issue. In over 30 years of using cameras of all types this is the most disappointing purchase I have made. My recommendation: spend the extra money and buy a reputable brand! Amazon should not even offer this product. Check out similar reviews on Radioshack.com for verification. Buyer Beware!

I bought this for my 7 year old daughter and she loves it! Not to mention she can take great pictures very easily. The bottom line is it's well worth the money. It has a lot of games pre-installed, also you can voice record and it works as an mp3 player as well. You can put e books on it as well as take video and jpeg pictures. The only setback I can see it no flash. But it takes a rechargeable lithion battery which is so much better than double A's.

This is a very stylish camcorder. But, as I wanted only a camcorder, for me it has too many left and unnecessary features (PC camera, MP3, etc.). I tried it right away and was a little bit disappointed. It is not usefull indoors or at night (do not have night shot features), and if the objective moves (or you move), the recorded image blurs also (do not have steady shot either). Maybe the producers can remove the PC camera, the MP3 and the voice recorder, and improve features more needed in a digital camcorder, such as the night shot and the steady shot.

As a general rule, I think buyers should beware of any product that combines more than two functions. This combination camera/video recorder/voice recorder/mp3 player is a prime example. If it did just one of these things well, it might be a useful item. Unfortunately, it takes mediocre pictures and records substandard video due to its cheap optics. It would have been better marketed as a cheap mp3 player that also happens to take pictures. That being said, it's not completely useless- a kid would probably love this thing. If you want a fun gift for a youngling who's only interested in taking silly snapshots and recording fart noises, this would be a decent choice.

my parents bought me this camera for x-mas four years ago and since then it has been sitting in my closet collecting dust. There is a lot to this camera that is wrong.

1. The picture quality is HORRIBLE! The pictures are too dark even with the flash on.

2. Getting photos on the computer is a pain. My brother is a computer wizz and he could not get the photos onto the computer.

3. The battery life is pathetic. You take three to four shots and your`e done you need to go buy more batteries.

So save yourself the trouble and do NOT buy this camera unless you want another thing in your closet collecting dust.

I bought this camera for my son because I thought it had everything a child would want and I was right. My son spents tons of time with his little camera, I enjoy this camera too when I get bored I get my son's camera and listen to the music on the mp3. This camera is very nice and it is really cheap. the only bad thing is that it does not has a rechargable batterie on it but that does not matter if you buy some AAA rechargable batteries and a charger. I totally recomend this item to everyone who is interested on it.

This is the worst camera i've ever seen for many reasons:

1. This camera only works outdoors or in a cmpletely iluminated room.

2. The flash is very useless at night.

3. It consumes batterries extrmely fast (it uses AAA)

4. The still pictures quality is very bad.

5. The videos have awful sound and a extremely poor quality. They appear with those big pixel squares.

I don't recommend this camera for anyone. Not eve a 5 years-old kid will enjoy it.

The reason I am giving only 3 stars is...refer the neagtive factors I have listed below....if you don't want that feature...this is a 5 star product for you then.

+ easy to use

+ reliable

+ handling

- Converting the mini DV to CD (The process is very very slow and the converted DVD/Cd format takes tons of your hard drive space (like 10 GB for 1 hr of video)

- Problem is you will have to convert the video to DVD or CD if you want to store it for lets say several years...like you home video....DV media is not safe to store for say couple of years...it will attract fungus and dust very quickly....and converting the video to DVD/CD format is a pain in the a$$.

I won't totally blame this on the seller, but will say that it was quite dissapointing to have a bad camera immediately after purchasing what I thought was a totally refurbed unit.

For the price the picture is certainy great.

An earlier reviewer had written about a problem with the tape getting tangled. One solution would be to record to the PC directly. As it is quite impossible to decipher the instructions from the manual I will briefly describe the procedure. Hook up the camera to the PC using the USB cable. Then start MotionDV Studio (which comes with the camera). Hit the play button, twice if necessary. What the camera sees should appear in the MotionDV window. Next click Capture and it will start recording directly to your PC, neat!

One serious defect of the camera is that if you use the microphone jack, it records only to the left channel!!! I tested a couple of cameras and they both have the same defect. I wrote to Panasonic, but no reply. I had to extract the video track from the AVI using VirtualDub, then convert to mono and back to stereo using Soliton and finally adding it back again using VirtualDub.

I've had this camcorder now for 6 months and it shoots great video. If you are looking for something for family type use it is perfect for that. The zoom is very nice and the image stabilization feature makes a huge difference.

My only problem with this camera is the product support that Panasonic provides. I was able to successfully load two full tapes onto my computer before it simply doesn't recognize that the camcorder is even plugged in now. Panasonic doesn't offer a video driver for this model on their website so for now I am stuck recording to tapes and just storing them until I can find a fix.

Other than that, I would recommend this camera for those looking to capture family type events.

I bought this camera 7 months ago and used it only rarely. (My total recording time was less than 2 hrs.)

This week I opened the camera to find out that it is dead. No display, nothing. Called the customer service and they asked me to ship the camera to their Camera Repair company. And the fee for that service: 161.5 Dollars. This is a flat fee according to them, no matter what happens to the camera.

I had a Sony 8mm camera for last 8 years and it still works fine. I am going to buy a Sony camera instead of wasting so much money on repair.

I bought this camera 4 years ago for $480. Recently I replaced with Sony HDR-SR10.

The indoor/low light picture quality is extremely poor.

Its CCD stop working within an year. Cannon repaired it for me. Later I came to know that it is a fundamental problem of this Camcorder. After that the quality was lost further. The footage is full of grains even at very high quality recording using a new DVC tape.

NOW I AM AFRAID EVEN TO LOOK AT ANY OF CANON'S CAMCORDERS. I WOULD ALWAYS RECOMMEND PANASONIC OR SONY CAMCORDERS.

I purchesed this camcorder 5 years ago. Haven't used it a lot but when I have I have bee happy with it. The only thing is the batterry. It only last 25-30 minutes. It sopose to last an hour. The tapes are 1 hour so you have to find a plug that you can use and are not in the way while shouting. The quality is great.

I bought a ZR80 about 3 years ago. It really seemed the perfect camera for me, new mommy who wants to record all the baby stuff. I got lovely videos and everything worked perfectly for almost 2 years. Suddenly, the screen started to appear black. It would record only the sound but not the image. It worked randomly, sometimes it would record the image, sometimes it just wouldn't..... very frustrating and disappointing! I have read other reviews stating similar problems. I will never get another Canon camera, as I don't plan to replace it every 2 years!!

We got this camera 3-years ago as a baby shower gift. The camera does not have high quality video indoors, the battery life is really short (lasts only about 30 minutes after being fully charged), and we ended up with the black screen of death (see reviews for Samsung SCD23 MiniDV Camcorder with 2.5 LCD). I would expect a video camera to last much longer than 3-years. I'm very disapointed with this camera and would not recommend it to anyone.

Canon recalled this item for a faulty CCD, the symptoms of which are static or no image at all recording to the tape. After about 15 hours of use I ran into this problem and was pretty bummed out, but after checking the Canon website I noticed that they had recalled the product and were offering free repairs (and free shipping). So, if it breaks, check the site, and send it in!

I've used this camcorder for home movies, school projects, and short video profiles. I now use a more professional 3CCD camcorder for my projects, but I keep this little one around as a backup, or use it for situations where portability is important. It has served me very well in the 4+ years I have owned it, but does have a few drawbacks.

Pro's:

-Good picture for a 1-chip portable camcorder

-Decent audio for an internal microphone (zoom out and get as close to your subject as possible for better audio, or get a wide-angle lens for best results)

-Feels solid

-Manual modes; white balance, focus, shutter speed

-Decent night shot

-Syncs and imports perfectly with editing software (like iMovie)

Con's

-No external mic input (this is my only "real" complaint)

-Loud bass records static (doesn't do concerts very well)

-Lens cap falls off way too easily

-Faulty CCD, but free repair

They sell on eBay for about 50 bucks, and even 4 or 5 years after its release, it's an overall good buy.

Numerous reports of camera stopping (type DCR trv38 and problem in google and you'll see what I mean) . The screen goes blank and that's the end of your DCR. Costs about $300 to repair. Reports from 2 months to 2 years usage and not linked to how often used or how treated. It is a problem with the "board" and your camera WILL die it's just a matter of when. It happened to us and we are thinking it was just us. We're buying a new DCR and you can bet it won't be a SONY even if they gave us one--they are too unreliable.

I've been looking around at prices and i'de say this is the best price I've found. I was checking out other cameras and found one for $500. It was not as good as this one and cost more. Its worth your cash and the specs are nice! Like the 25x optical zoom is crazy. The digital zoom doesn't really make a difference after u get over 200x zoom on that. So dont think that 700x zoom makes much of a difference. I'de say buy it asap.

However, the camera recently broke, despite extremely mild usage. The camera will no longer close with a cassette inside. I now know that this defect is fairly common, but an expensive repair. I'm looking for a different camera, different brand. Sony has a quality problem.

I have a same problem with VDR D220. I contacted Panasonic support and they said that I must have a software Ulead to develope its file in order to play on a computer. Then you can burn files or clip to DVD disc to play as normal. Ulead software does not come with the package. You have to buy seperately.

Recording functionality is fine, quality is fine. But I have had huge battles transfering the files to my computer, so they can be viewed on the internet, and sent to friends. The files are in a VRO and IFO format. I have been able to get it to work somewhat by changing the VRO file to a MPG file. But it doesn't view properly if there are multiple clips in the file, unless I combine them all into one file on the camcorder first. I would also have loved it if I were able to just download one clip off my camcorder or somehow seperate them, so they can be viewed as separate files. So far my answer has been to get several discs and switch the disc everytime I want a new clip to be separate from the others. then I upload them off each disk seperately. I have tried using different software types and I haven't found one that solves the problem. If anyone knows and easier way to fix this problem, I would love to hear about it.

DON'T buy the Sony DCR-DVD408. I bought directly from Sony------had trouble from the begining. I also bought the extened warranty. of course it was out of Sonys warrenty and they would not do anything to help and further more didn't care. So I thought at least I purchased the extended warrenty. I called them and they had me send it to Precision Camera, #3 anngina drive, enfield,ct 06082, my repair order from them was pcr tag number 2487869, the middle of march, 2009. The work was done on april 4th, 2009. When I got it back, it work at first. and thier warrenty is 90 days. As I don't use the unit much except during the holiday seasons, birthdays and special events, I got it out to use to record my nephews college basketball game, the reason I was going to was because his dad has prostate cancer and is not physiclly able to go, so I wanted him to at least see him play his second game, So I thought, of course it did the same thing again, called SONY WHAT A WASTE OF MY TIME, CALLED THE WARRENTY COMPANY, MY CONTRACT RAN OUT IN OCTOBER THIS YEAR. My problem is if its doing the same thing why wouldn't any one help me out. So I'm warning you, there is a problem with the dvd door not opening, and don't worry you wont get any help from SONY. SO YOU DO HAVE A CHOICE, BUY A DIFFERNT BRAND. I'm in the retail buisness and have spent alot more than this mini dvd ever cost to help a good loyal customer happy. So I know the value of helping a customer out, SONY DOES NOT! THIS IS MY EXPERICENCE WITH THEM I'm sure some of the players are just fine, but if you get one like mine don't expect any help.

This was a fabulous camcorder quality wise. But it is VERY difficult to connect it to the computer. You must "finalize" the disc to import the video on the computer, and then if you want to use that disc again you must "format" the disc which deletes all the videos on the disc. And if you want to delete some videos on the disc, you have to press all these buttons to get to a list of options, where you see the option you want, but it is grayed out. Or at least in my case. It has fantastic quality and works well and it has fairly simple buttons and the touch screen is mediocre.

At just over a pound, the lightweight ZR40 from Canon makes an excellent camcorder for the beginning digital-video enthusiast. This compact and comfortable camcorder offers high-end features found on much more expensive cameras, yet is easy enough to use that a novice can begin filming right away.

The camera is sleekly designed, and pieces pop out of the ZR40 from all sides. On top, the adjustable lens viewer also slides in and out so you don't have to hold the camera too close when filming. You can also use the 2.5-inch LCD screen, which swings out of the left side of the ZR40. It also twists and can be flipped over, providing myriad filming angles.

While we were suitably impressed with the image of our capture video, the sound of the camera's motor could be heard during some of the playback. It's a minor annoyance, which can be overcome with an optional external microphone.

With an 18X optical zoom (as well as 360X digital) intuitively placed next to the right thumb, the ZR40 is able to get up close to the subjects you're filming. Canon's image stabilizer worked well at correcting the "shake" common to handheld cameras. And the camera functions as a digital camera as well, taking snapshots in addition to video.

The ZR40 offers a variety of connectivity options, including FireWire ports, composite AV, and S-video. You can input from an analog source such as a VCR, TV, or camcorder and convert the signal into digital video. It also ships with a handy remote control (with a range of 16 feet) that handles the record functions and can even zoom the lens in and out.

Various special effects modes are incorporated into the camera as well, in addition to a new low-light mode that allowed us to shoot footage in the evening. There are DV cameras out there that do more than this one, but for most users, the ZR40 does plenty and does it well. --J. Curtis

Yes it does eat tapes. I have the camera and I have owned it for about 3 years. It did some fine work. I have no complaints except if you need a camera that will never eat tapes, be very wary.

I posted my movies on a couple of websites. I make short movies. I used the Canon ZR40 and made movies with the Sonic Foundry Vegas 4 editing system. It made fine movies in the wmv or rm or mov for Quicktime web formats. My short films are at hollywoodscreams and myhollywoodstar and those are dot com, of course. They are family friendly.

Recently I tried to rewind a tape. It got mangled. I figured it was just the tape. I tried a second tape and another. Each time I would record something OK but the tape would get jammed during rewind. On the movie Hollywood Screams I rewound each scene by hand. That is very hard to do. I had to use two toothpicks to hold the cassette lid open so I could pull the tape out and then wind the spool by hand. It was very time consuming.

The video looks good and I never noticed noise. I am sure each brand of camcorder has some problem. Canon has a mechanism that mangles tapes in rewind after several years of use if my camcorder is typical.

Like many of the other reviewers, my ZR40 is now giving me the infamous "Remove cassette" message and is mangling tapes. I have used it to record maybe 7 hours worth of video over the last two years. Search the web for "canon zr users group" and "eating tapes" to hear similar horror stories. Stay away from Canon camcorders.

Like many who have found this camcorder, I liked the canon name and bought based on Canon and value. It was a mistake because I don't feel I should have already used up the life of this camera yet. If you go to several discussion groups you will see it has several issues with the deck, i.e. "transport". Just google zr20/40 etc. and "eat tapes". Suggest you try Sony or Panasonic.

6 months later. I started transferring video to my computer only to find out this stupid camera eats tapes. I have lost two tapes so far. One of them was my son's birth!!!!

The eating tapes issue is a major problem with this unit. They have known about it and continue to ignore it. Do a search on "zr40 tape problems" to see what I am talking about. There are even more results on sister product, zr10. I will never buy a product from Canon again. They are idiots for doing this to their customers.

I purchased this camcorder for a college course from this site factory sealed, from a third party. It did not work. I am not sure if the seller purchased this item knowing it did not work with the intent to make a quick buck. After failing my class for the first 2 weeks because the camera is defective. I had to go with a more reliable name brand. THERE IS A REASON SAMSUNG NO LONGER MANUFACTURES THIS ITEM. My camera was purchased in 2003 and was out-of-warranty by the time I got it. I feel taken by the seller, who probably knew the item was defective or got it at an extremely low price for resale. Who knows if I will ever get my money back. Lesson learned, if it's not sold at Best Buy it's really not a best buy, and too good to be true.

I bought this camera several years ago. It worked fine for a year or so, then stopped working. It would only record audio and I could not use the viewfinder or screen. Since it was an inexpensive unit, I determined that it was a goner. I stashed it in the basement. Three years later, I was cleaning the basement and I found it. Still dead. I did some research and found that there was a class action lawsuit regarding this camera.

Give Samsung a call and they will either repair your existing unit, or send you a refurbished SC-D382 at no charge.

Although Samsung makes extraordinary LCD products, their camcorder line is bottom of the barrel. This is my 2nd Samsung camcorder, and it is also the 2nd time I've been ripped off. My last one (I forget the model) and this one both stopped recording video about a month or two after the warranty expired. Since neither Samsung or Best Buy (where I bought them) care about this decidedly negative customer experience (and apparently seem to think that 1 year of usage is about par for the course) I have decided to no longer buy their products (including their splendid monitors). Companies that consistently screw their customers do not deserve to remain in business. I hope someday Best Buy and Samsung go bankrupt. Buy a Canon, and buy it online. You'll be happy and you'll save money.

If you plan to buy this camcorder then please know before hand that you are taking a risk. You might get a broken one or not. That is the risk you are taking. When I first purchased this camcorder 3 years ago, I only used it for 1 week and already it broke. The screen was all distorted and was making weird noises. I took it back to bestbuy and they exchanged it for a new one. I have now had this one for 3 years and have had no problems. I love this camcorder. At this point I would not buy a new camcorder because I love this one too much. I have read all of the buyers comments on amazon and yes it is true that this camcorder is cheaply made and is does break but like I said, you are taking a risk if you buy it. It might be broken or it might work fine for 3 years or more like mine. But remember, mine broke too after using it for 1 week but my exchange one has worked for 3 years and counting. So, I guess I wouldnt recommend this camcorder because who wants to buy a camcorder and have to take a risk and wonder if it will be broken when they receive it.

We've recently replaced this camcorder with a Sony SR12 hard drive camcorder. The hard drive camcorder is the way to go. This DVD camcorder is nice and simple to use, but the 30 minute DVDs is too much of a headache to keep changing in and out, especially when you're right in the middle of capturing an event.

If your intention is to simply capture videos that are less than 30 minutes, then this might be the camcorder for you. But if you don't want the hassle of changing out tapes and DVDs, then go to a hard drive camcorder instead.

"Great video; horrible software; bad microphone" 2009-01-05

WARNING: the microphone in this camera makes a lot of noise! If I had known that, I would not have bought this camera - do not buy this camera unless you don't mind that the slightest bit of wind noise should make a huge amount of noise in the final video!

WARNING: do not install the USB driver that comes with the Sony 'Picture Perfect' software included with this camera - it made my Windows XP system unbootable; could not boot even in 'safe mode'. This Sony software is more evil than any virus or trojan I have ever encountered. Fortunately, I was able to restore my C: drive from my automated daily backup image.

I have used this camera for 3 1/2 years without needing to install the software drivers and have been happy with the video and general usability of this camera. Rather than trying to use Sony's horrible software, the preferred method of transferring data is simply to:

1. Finalize the DVD, in the camera

2. Insert the mini-DVD in your computer's DVD drive and manually copy the files to your hard drive

If you need to edit the video on the DVD, the best way I've found is to open the .VOB files with VideoReDo Plus.

The video and battery life are excellent. I haven't had any problems so far except for the following complaints about design:

1. MICROPHONE - The microphone picks up way too much wind noise, making it difficult to shoot outdoors. Even a small breeze will create so much ugly noise that it makes watching the video annoying without turning off the sound completely on playback.

Unfortunately, there is no good workaround for this problem since Sony did not include an external microphone input jack.

2. ZOOM - is far too sensitive. It really takes two hands on the tiny zoom lever to get anything other than a rapid or jerky zoom, although, with practice, improved my ability to do it with my thumb. Not easy.

RECOMMENDED OPTION: I purchased a clip in spot light that solves the problem of graininess in low light situations.

Though I purchased this camera partly due to its low-light performance, compared with other cameras, I found that the resulting image quality too dark and grainy for my taste.

I have had this camcorder for quite some time and it is a thing of beauty. I will now pass it on to my brother with some sadness, as I hate to see it go. Very easy to use. It turns on and off quickly. Comfortable to hold. Image stabilization is very good. Sound quality and video is very nice.

The very best part about this camcorder is that it records to mini DVD that I could pop out and play right in my DVD player without having to convert or connect using wires. The only downside for me was the disc only recorded about 20 minutes worth of footage. I had to carry a small stack of discs with me when I went on vacation.

I have owned four camcorders and this is my hands down favorite.

I've used this successfully with Maxwell, Panasonic, Sony and other mini DVDs in -R and -RW formats.

However I have not had any success with Memorex Duralayer +RW DVDs.

In the 3 years? or so that I have had the camera it has functioned well.

I have had to replace the battery with a larger capacity model and to replace the charger when it cooked.

Other than those items it has done a good job.

I've owned this camera for about 18 months now. I wanted a camera that could shoot both decent video and stills, and would do mpeg2 encoding to save me the work of converting DV-AVI files to mpeg2 myself. This camera largely met those goals but has lots of annoyances too.

1. The lens cover. If you read the reviews here you'll be well aware that the lens cover on this camera is very prone to failure. In my case the lens cover will not close. There was no apparent reason for the sudden failure; I have always taken good care of the camera and only use it lightly.

2. The PC software is truly appalling. Forget about doing anything useful with it. I use it in its first couple of steps just to get it to extract the individual mpeg2 files out of the DVD VOB files it creates, and then manually rename each one with the date and time, then I copy them out of the temp directory and quit the app. It's way more tedious than it need be just to do this, and useless beyond this basic task (and it crashes and/or hangs frequently so often requires several attempts).

3. If you use non-Sony media the camera complains, and you cannot access the non-Sony media on your PC until it is finalized. This is pure evil manufacturer lock-in BS; I don't believe there is any technical reason for this as non-Sony media support multi-session writes.

4. The still camera works great in good light but not in low light. The pictures are more reminiscent of CMOS sensors than a CCD.

5. It's a Sony. That means don't expect any of these issues to be fixed or even acknowledged. Once Sony have your money you're dirt.

After waiting several weeks for this item I checked the UPS tracking system and learned that the product was damaged in a train derailment. I emailed back to Amazon and was told they would look into it. A couple of weeks after that I finally got a refund (after I'd had to pay interest on my credit card, of course.) And to top it off, Amazon keeps asking me to review the product, which is kind of pissing me off, really. I'm happy that the issue was resolved, but upset that I had to be the one to initiate the communication to get it resolved. Having said that, I would still shop from Amazon in the future.

JVCs are great if you don't need any accessories or never need customer service. if you do you are in trouble. I bought a JVC video recorder last year and despite it being new it came without most of the accessories offered with it--things you'll probably need such as the cable to connect it to the TV and the one to connect it to the computer. I had to buy each of these for $40 each--they would not ship them, and also had to buy the software that was supposed to come with the camera. after all that, the leads broke, then the zoom button would stick, and finally the camera started eating tape. the customer service was useless and I finally just threw it out. I had owned this JVC product for less than a year and will never buy another one.

I ordered the original item, used it for about a week, then sent it to my son in New Hampshire. He used it less than fifteen minutes and it locked up, never to function properly again. I ordered a replacement, checked it out and sent it on to him, with the same result -- less than 15 minutes of use, it quit working.

I thought the unit was nice, compact and fairly easy to use, but with two malfunctions in two cameras, I don't think I would recommend this Aiptek model to anyone.

Hi, I bought this camera and installed the driver from both the CD and then the web. It caused my computer (a good, modern, fast computer) to crash both times. The camera worked without interfacing with the computer, but, then, what's the point? Also, the pictures and movies were VERY grainy and low quality. The tech support when I had these problems was HORRIBLE. They really didn't stand behind the product AT ALL and to me that's the most important thing! Maybe I could have gotten it to work, but not without SOME input from Aiptek.

I've never written one of these reviews before, but this really got to me. Don't buy this camera is my advice.

I bought this kit for filming and editing on the computer, and it works great. I managed to fit almost everything in the case provided, including the lenses, battery charging stuff, camera, and memory cards. The camera has two filming options, avchd and mpeg2, and the video quality is beautiful. Also, the provided tripod is very nice, comes with a carrying case and has bubbles letting you know if the camera is level. I would DEFINITELY advise this kit to a friend. Great deal for your money. My only grievance is that the replacement battery would not work with my camera.

The various listings on amazon for the dxg 506 are all the same cameras.

The only difference is the colors be it black, blue, silver, or pink

so the reviews that purtain to one of them would apply to all of them.

If you want a low priced video recorder that will fit in your pocket, store on an SD card, and use AA batteries this would fit that bill.

Aside from the weak low light performance the worst thing I've found

on the camera is the lens cap tends to fall off. There is some hiss on

the audio unless you have plenty of input volume.

"Good picture quality" 2009-11-15

I use this camcorder at work on a daily basis. It's portable, but slightly heavy. A carrying case is a must.

I've used it primarily to shoot video for editing in Final Cut Pro. FCP can recognize and directly control it via the Capture and Log window (when using the Firewire connection). The picture quality is great, especially when shooting in 1080. A tripod, however, yields better and more professional results.

We've used several of these camcorders extensively for almost two years, and they're all still going strong. So, the build quality is definitely there.

Recommended.

"Good HD Vodeo Camera" 2009-06-18

I have had this camera for about 2 1/2 years now, and it is an extremely good camera overall.

I chose this over the Hard drive versions for 3 main reasons; tapes can be easily purchaced when the ones you are using are full, tapes arent susceptible to damage from jerky motion, and it was about $100 cheaper. It would help to have drag and drop capabilities, as to transfer video to a computer you do still have to play the tape in real time.

The video quality is good. I had a Panasonic MiniDV camcorder before this one. And I will say that the video quality of this camera is much better than any consumer SD camera.

The only complaint I have about this camcorder is that it doesn't support any progressive video recording OR display modes, even though it has the "Full 1080" sticker on it. By this I mean that it can only record in wither 1080i or 480i, and when you play it on a TV or transfer it to a computer, you can only play it in 1080i or 480i. There is no 720p option at all. The only way to get progressive video out of this camcorder is to capture the 1080i stream onto your computer, and then convert it to 720p (or 1080p if you want to), which is a painfully long process.

The quality of video is still fairly good when converted to 720p. I have a BD Player, but no BD burner. So, I convert the HDV mpeg2 ts streams this camcorder creates to x264 720p using MeGui, and then from there create an AVCHD disk using tsMuxer. Burn that to a DVD-R and It plays in my Samsung BD player, and the quality is still very good (of course it depends on the encoding settings used in MeGui).

The video quality is also much worse when you are indoors and the lighting isn't good. The video becomes extremely grainy, and much detail isn't visible.

Other random things; I also really like the touch screen LCD on this camera, it is very clever, innovative, and easy to use. I like that this camcorder is still a MiniDV camcorder, and uses the same tapes as my old MiniDV camcorder even though that camcorder wasn't a HD camcorder. I like that this camera still hooks up to a computer using Firewire, and it is easy to transfer (losslessly) video from the camcorder to the PC. I like that the camcorder can hook up to the TV through A/V cables, Component A/V cables (for HD viewing), AND HDMI (for HD viewing); it gives you lots of ooptions.

Overall, good quality, lots of connectivity options, clever, and a good choice for a camcorder.

I bought this while living in Hawaii and sold it a little before moving. The whole process of getting it from dv to file format was just too annoying for me. The quality of the video was pretty good, not as high as hoped. The slow motion capture was a nice feature, but was pretty restrictive.

The compact size was great and it was relatively easy to handle on the go.

I'd definitely say at this point to avoid DV even at some quality loss and go with something that is recording straight to file for ease.

I got this camera for home use, I own professional Sony HD cameras, so Sony is always my top choice.

I am extremely pleased with this camera. I have been shooting and editing video as a hobby for about 10 years and am thrilled with the image quality of this lens and the processor. If you are going to buy it, my only recommendation is to make sure your computer can handle editing HD video. It is MUCH more data than standard "Mini DV" or Digital Video and will be extremely taxing on your computer's processor.

As compared to similar products in the same price range that I tested in stores, the Sony seems to be slightly better built in terms of its casing. The only potential flaw I noticed was the plastic "door" for the ports. This thing could break extremely easily.

I have found this camcorder takes fantastic video as long as you set the indoor / outdoor button properly.

Negatives I have read about and agree with:

1) It is a little slow to focus at times

2) Still pictures don't look good

3) Records in .MOD format so editing and playback of files stored on a computer can be extremely problematic. I agree the included software for this is not very sophisticated and not user friendly. I found it an unacceptable long term solution.

HOWEVER THERE ARE SOME SOLUTIONS THAT SOLVE THE VIDEO EDITING PROBLEM = Adobe Premiere ($400-$600 I believe)and Pinnacle Studio (multiple versions) support the .MOD format (format support listed on both websites). I use Pinnacle studio "plus" version 11 which I found on sale for $99. It flawlessly recognizes, plays, and edits video from this camcorder and is a much more powerful program the Microsoft Movie Maker which I was previously using. With this software I love the camcorder. Without this software, moving, playing and editing files on anything other than the camcorder was a nightmare.

So, I would rate this 5 stars except for the negatives above. Without the Pinnacle software I agree w/ the 1-2 start rating a few have given.

This camera is great, only problem is, that almost immediately, two vertical lines appeared on the display. Another line appeared a few days after that. It makes no difference to the recording, but I am afraid that after a while I will not see what's on the display. I bought this for my dad and were able to give it to him after a few month so now I am wondering if I get any warranty help from JVC.

I bought this camcorder about a year ago and haven't used it much... just been taking video here and there. Now I'm ready to do some editing and the file format it records to, .MOD is not recognized by any program except the lame video editing program it comes with. I have Adobe Premiere CS3 with the latest update and it still doesn't work. There are programs out there for converting the files, I've tried one, it's a pain, and I still can't get the audio to work with the video.

Don't just take my word for it, google .MOD and JVC and see what everyone else is saying.

"Save Yourself the TROUBLE!" 2008-06-01

I recently just got this camera and boy is it frusterating! Now don't get me wrong the video quality is just pure excellence compared to the last camera I used. Another pro is the night alive feature which allows you to turn on a light built in the camera if necessary. Now with the cons. The camera files are saved as MOV files which are basically basically mpeg files, but none of my computer editing software can recognize it, including Windows Movie Maker and Sony Vegas Pro. I have wasted nothing, but precious time to solve this, but none of the solutions I've found appeal to me. I don't want to lose any quality and only want to edit the files directly through the programs I have (without converting)and not use the poor editing software it came with. Shame! with it's price tag it should be able to do the basic function what my previous $80 camera was capable of doing.

I purchased this a christmas present for myself so I could video tape my children opening gifts. I could not get it to load up completely when I pressed the on button. The screen kept sticking. I finally got it to take 3 pictures but could not view them. It's not that complicated to work but I personally believe it had prior damage possibly from water. I have tried to contact the seller to return it and they swear they only used it once and it worked great for them but.. however it does not work properly at all!! I wish I hadn't purchased it.

i bought this camera to record my surfing, it says 8 X zoom , but when you zoom the camera it get all wrong with the focal distance.

about the lcd, all i have to say is that you can not see nothing if is too sunny, how you can get anything if you can not see what is going on.

and the battery life i think is some kind of joke, i recorder no more than five minutes and is all gone.

And the worst part is that i live in brazil and can not return the product.

it really sucks them dry quickly. if you're going to buy a cheap camera and have to spend 3 or four bucks every time you want to use it for more than 5 minutes, well, not so cheap! The A/V quality is so-so, but that's not such a big deal, it actually makes for an interesting "artsy" effect. But really, I need to find one that has better battery life, or invest in some rechargeables!

So, I had to replace my 17 year old Panasonic palmcorder. I knew I wasn't going to be continuing with a camera that utilizes a c size cassette. And, seeing as how christmas just came, I didn't want to spend a lot of money, or make a permanent decision on what kind of format to go with. I made my decision after reading many reviews on some of the cheaper models. At $59.50, how could I go wrong. From reading reviews, i knew I was buying a camera that wouldn't be great indoors. But, outdoors, the video it shoots is really quite good. And, even though I wasn't buying it for still shots, I was very impressed with the two shots i took of my daughter. The camera is tiny, and almost feels like a toy. The doors to the memory compartment, and where you hook up the wires are very flimsy, but, so far, so good. It does eat up batteries big time, but, if I decide to use this for a while, I'm going to get rechargeable ones. I've read some reviews on this model where people were complaining that it doesn't have enough memory. I bought a one gig memory stick for under 20 bucks. At under a hundred bucks you can't go wrong with this camera. Just don't have high expectations of using it indoors. Although, I did use it recently in an indoor situation with a lot of natural light coming in, and it came out much better than i expected. Combined with the price I got it for, I give it an excellent rating, but be very gentle with compartment doors. I am amending this review to 'good' on March 11th 2007 because one of the compartment doors is now in two pieces. And all I did was remove it the only way you can. And it just came off in two pieces. It does still go back on. It's the cover for the spots where the different input wires would plug in. I should also mention that the software with this camera does some pretty good things. I was able to edit out a short clip from a video and email it to a neighbor, and you can also make a jpeg from a video still shot. The zoom on this camera is digital, which I have now learned, is pretty useless. I've now learned the hard way that you need an optical zoom to be able to have any clarity as you zoom in. But, at under 60 bucks, it's still a fun toy. I even have mp3 clips loaded in and it does work well as an mp3 player. You can fill a memory card with music, and have a cheap ipod. But, who knows how long this thing will last?? It's a good way to learn the world of digital recording. And I didn't even get to the voice recorder...it works well.

This HD Video camera is an amazing piece of equipment. However, when I received he shipment it was poorly packed and I did not receive all items that I had paid for. I received the wrong memory card, there was no software that was suppose to come with the original equipment, the instruction manual was in French. I spoke to an amazon rep and he sent me the right memory card but I have still no received the proper manual or software so I am still unable to take any of the video of my camera. I was looking for a home camcorder. I have a Canon A620 digital camera and I think excellent (the price was high, but I do not regret), but the prices of camcorders Canons are much higher.

When I got a good bargain from Amazon by Panasonic TM SD10 (U.S. $ 299.00, the price of the common definition camcorders), even knowing the limitations of the model, I decided to buy it. Certainly it is a good camcorder. The daylight does an excellent job. The 16X optical zoom is great, in digital, 80X to work well, then it is a waste (the sharpness is bad).

Low light it loses detail and the colors are washed, but nothing different than most camcorders can do.

The sound is very good, there is the zoom function on the microphone.

To avoid problems, highly recommended to only download the videos to your PC using the HD Writer program that came with the camera (just so you can use it). To convert the file extension m2ts mts AVCHD ts in vob (DVD), mpeg, avi wmv etc., Format Factory is a great free program.

In the end, I believe that the price of U.S. $ 299.00 U.S. $ 350.00 is fair, nothing more. If you really can spend more, maybe three times, thinking of satisfaction in the long run, search for other models (HF Canon S10 Canon VIXIA HFS10 HD Dual Flash Memory with 32 GB Internal Memory and 10x Optical Zoom and S11 Canon VIXIA HF S11 HD Dual Flash Memory Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom everyone recommends) and compare the stores (if possible with a full hd tv and hdmi cable).

(The camcorder will not record or play tapes because the "eject" signal appears even with new tapes.) After this experience, I would avoid all Samsung products.

It connects with my PC with no problem, my PC and laptop both recognized it immediately after plugging it in. The camera is also reliable. this camera is an excellent camera. i bought it and it took great videos and good still pics. about a year after i got the camera i started getting an error message on the screen. it said that the unit was in safeguard mode eject and reinsert tape. upon doing so, nothing happened. the message still showed up on the screen. i tried everything i could think of to reset the camera. i removed the battery for several hours and tried again and the message still appeared. i have recently sent a message to jvc and am waiting for a reply on how to solve this problem. if you buy this camera make sure you get an extened warranty on it.

If you are thinking about buying this camera don't hesitate one minute, this camcorder is one of the kind, it gives you pretty much the flexibility and video quality of a regular camcorder but with the amazing bring-it-in-the-pocket size and all the coolness and attention that it brings along (let it be your best Ice breaker, believe me it works like heaven!). I work for a camera store and let me tell you: we haven't received one return of this model during the time I've worked there (8 months), which proves the high quality SONY has built into this model. I have been using mine for a few months now and all I can say is that "the product is great... period!".

Let's get real, the 500 bucks you are paying for it is not for the film quality kind of movie you get in the picture (for that you need to spend at least a couple of thousand dollars) but the portability and worriless of no need of the big luggage a camcorder used to be in the past" (some times people don't realize a motorcycle couldn't be compared with a truck or vise versa).

About the picture shooting option, well let's see! A camcorder is for videos and a digital camera is for photos, if you want to have them both in one package, that brings excellent quality, you'd have to spend a lot of more money than if you bought them separately, let me explain you in a few words, the average photo quality for a MINI DV camcorder is 1.3mp or lower (the same quality you get out of your cell phone camera) to be honest with you, the manufacturers add this option just to give it an extra feature and at the same time take more money out of your pocket, with tape less digital cameras it happens the same way, the video and sound quality are very poor; so why bother paying more for a camera with both functions being excellent (there are quite a few out in the market now, starting around $1200 for models of similar size) instead buy two little cameras, one for each use, for half of the price.

As it's design purpose, PC-55 is enough for home use

Only one thing I want to mention here, before I buy this camcorder, I thought that I can record video on MS duo in mepg format, and it's easy for post-edit on PC, you know, tansfer a MiniDV tape to computer may need a huge space to save.

However, when I replay the video which stored on MS, the sreen was full of mosaic

fortunately, when use DV type to record, this situation never happens. good quality.

The one press photo button also becomes useless because the bad quality.

I bought this camera the day my daughter was born over 2 1/2 yrs ago. I paid about 250 for it but the advertised price was 450. I guess it was on sale. Still not sure how that happened but no complaints here. The zoom is great, the dvd quality and video is great. The battery life can go through about 3 dvd's (which are only 30 mins a piece) and a little more depending on if you use the lcd screen or the eye piece. This is my second camcorder and they have both been sony's. I love the touch screen technology and I've never had any problems with sony products. The only draw backs to this camcorder are the picture quality, the fact that you cannot record to an sd card and the price apparently. This price on amazon is extremely high. I have seen more sony dvd camcorders come out since this one and they have had much more features such as the picture quality and sd card slots and they are as much or cheaper than this. I wouldn't pay 566 for this camera but it's def worth anywhere under 300 dollars.

i have wanted a camcorder since the 80s, but could not afford to get a good one. truth is i still feel that way about camcorders, most my extra money goes to music and recording.

i saw this cam about a year and half ago, used for 125. i must say i am very pleased w my purchase. some of these reviewer have valid points, in that it is difficult to get really good shots one after the other. but it kept me busy till i got a laptob with corel editing software. and i tell, though antiquated a bit, it does what i need it to do really well. many told me i would have issues getting mini disc to burn, i did not, my vaio laptob plays them everytime, and with editing software, you can do almost anything. and the effects on this camera are really cool, i like to shoot scenes and add my own music to it in the end, and i often watch the results on a dell 1200mp projector, for what i have invested, i have literally hundreds of mini dvds, about half of which i have ran through corel. and sum of the scenes have been beyond rewarding, and ive learned alot just through using the camera daily.

best part about this cam, it couldnt be any easier to run, now dealing with editing software was annoying at first, but im better w film for it. if you are new to cameras, and looking a midgrade cam, i do reccomend the dcr dvd 105.

another thing, if you watch amazon regularly, youll see the mini rewritable dvds by memorex are sometimes on sale for 9 dollars a ten pack, so i stock up then,and wait for the next time.

This camera has served me well since it was introduced. It's untimely death this summer has me searching for another hi-quality camcorder. This piece of equipment fell off many a ski lift, slammed into many a mogul, and found itself buried in many a waist high powder fest. Very rugged and great on the ski slopes, on the beach, and just about any outdoor activity you could want to record. Indoor recordings were very professional as many piano recitals were recorded. I think the audio was great for a camcorder this size. But using an external microphone solved this issue. Now, when you go to a stadium concert, you are allowed to bring in a camcorder as long as it is smaller than 3". You won't find a better camcorder to record a U2 concert at Soldier Field. I hope there is an updated version of this camcorder as I search for a new one.

I bought this camcorder for its blend of feature and good value for price. I used it mainly for auto track days, recording video from a suction mount and it performed adequately, returning good image and sound quality and acceptable battery life. Features like the microphone input jack and the IR remote control were precious in that usage model.

Unfortunately, the camcorder stopped working abruptly after 3 years of light and careful use, camera still functional but no image. So much for Sony's reputation for quality and reliability.

We had this camera for about 1.5 years before it konked out. We can now only record audio. Every blue moon we'll get video for about a minute before it goes black. My husband works in the film industry and this camera was meant to be used at home for the kiddos and he spent hours researching video equipment before he bought this product. I can't stand spending money fixing a camera that was $400 and from the looks of other reviewers, I won't be calling Sony for customer support.

"Good Entry-level Camera, software bundle lacking" 2010-01-07

The only other review on Amazon as of this writing for this camera is such a low rating that while I feel it is a good review, it is unfairly biased against the camera. I bought this camera because I didn't currently have a DV Cam that I could use to record those moments when a DV cam would come in handy. Here's a rundown on the strengths and weaknesses of the camera.

Strengths: Records in widescreen format - in an increasingly "widescreen world" where monitors are now wider than they are tall, this camera captures moments that fit nicely on that new HDTV or 24" LCD you bought for the computer. While the camera does record in this format, the details can be a little hazy at times if the light level isn't up to par, and the focus has a tendency to roam often. You can set the focus to manual, and for the most part it will still capture a clean video without fiddling too much with the manual control (which it does offer, and it is fairly straight forward). The audio capture is excellent - often picking up on nuances that you may miss while you're focusing in on the action. Since the camera supports a quick standby feature, I often find myself using it to conserve battery power, without waiting for the camera to start up when you flip the rotary knob. The knob to select record modes is pretty straight forward, as I have shown several people how to turn the camera on and get to recording with hardly any instruction. Since the camera records to an integrated hard drive - not a "weakness" if you are in the market for a Hard Drive camera, you will be greeted with over 500 minutes of record time on a blank drive. I've recorded entire trips into the mountains in a single recording session - trips that will often take upwards of 2+ hours (I used a car AC/DC adapter to keep the power on!). The option to record to mini-DVD is a bonus as I prefer to use the hard drive, but it's nice having a backup option if the HDD is full or, as they all tend to do eventually, the drive fails. (I've used mine for over a year, no issues yet). Taking photos to the SD card slot is good, though I would prefer to have the option to take photos to the hard drive, I knew about this prior to purchasing the camera, and a 1 GB flash card is plenty for me. I also liked the image finder / review screen as it will easily swing out from the camera body, and swivel 180 degrees so that you can watch yourself if you are into recording yourself, or just want to see it from a distance while you use the included remote control.

Weaknesses: Can get fuzzy in low light, and since the focus roams often in these situations, it isn't the best camera to use in low light settings unless you're good with the manual focus. The included software is buggy at best (ImageMixer 3) but it is up to date, and is fairly easy to understand. If you have a problem getting it to transfer videos on a modern PC with Windows Vista or Windows 7, set the compatibility mode on the program to Start as Administrator (If you still use User Account Control or UAC) and the OS compatibility to "Windows XP Service Pack 2" and you'll find that the software operates a lot better. On my laptop, with Windows Vista and later, Windows 7, the transfer times on videos were absurd - a 700 Meg video file would take 30+ minutes on USB 2.0. To make matters worse, a smaller 5 MB video would take the same amount of time prior to setting the compatibility. I'd also have the same issues as the other reviewer with transfers failing 5 minutes in, or right at the end - a frustrating ordeal for sure. I'm not saying it's a "catch all" solution, but fiddle with it on your system and see if it works for you. I've contacted Hitachi support and they say that some folks on their team tell people to do it this way and they've had fairly good results. For me however, now transfers can go uninterrupted and large files transfer in the time they should on any other USB 2.0 device. Smaller files transfer lightning quick.

To Sum it up for you "visual" folks (I know reading is dull sometimes!)

Pros: Spacious hard drive recording, DVD record option, widescreen aspect, good sound quality capture, remote control, included AC adapter for times when the battery is dead, dubbing is average; though far from perfect, good anti-shake correction, 3 Megapixel capture, ample instruction manual, good zoom distance, swing-out image finder/preview screen is bright & clear, and easy to use.

Cons: Spotty software, focus is annoying in low light situations, included battery is anemic, relatively scant in terms of controls, Swivel mode dial can be annoying in placement sometimes, only 3 megapixel capture.

If you need an entry into the DV Cam world, this is a great little camera to get started with. If the software bundle was a little more robust, and a focus that works in lower light situations, it could very well be a perfect starter camera, but if you can find it on sale, or just need a starter camera, you really should give this one a look.

I bought this camera trying to save buck but ended up getting a Canon VIXIA HF100. Here's my feedback with the camera.

Pros

* Video formats saved in mpeg which was easily viewed on my Media Center to XBox 360 with no conversion.

* You can configure to capture at 16x9 widescreen.

* Its smaller than I thought it would be.

Cons

* Picture quality at the highest level was just OK.

* The selection button between SD card, HDD and DVD was ill placed and a pain to switch.

* You need to run specific software to transfer files from camera HDD to PC.

* The transfer rates were slow and would periodically disconnect even with small video clips.

* The still pictures only allows a 1 GB SD card. I can see SDHC not allowed but not allowing 2 GB is odd.

* No cover for the camera lens. I touched it several times by accident.

So its not a bad camera for the price but if you want to get better quality video and easier use, I recommend shopping around. I particularly like the Canon since I can record to SDHC card, no moving parts, less battery power, and I can pop the card into my card reader and transfer with no special software. SDHC prices are low and dropping in a card slot to PC is the way to go to transfer large video clips.

After you get past the euphoria produced by the great quality picture the gs150 produced you'll soon see the huge flaws in it's other features. The auto focus is incredibly buggy, it will jump into a blurry focus at the slightest change and will take far too long to correct itself. After it's done with it's blurry seizure you are ticked that your son's graduation is really blurry so you set it to manual focus which is controlled by it's joystick and is completely useless for keeping any moving object in focus.

If you want to produce any video beyond that of small, placid, family events then do NOT buy this camera. The clarity of it's picture is overshadowed by it's inability to control it.

I really enjoy my Panasonic power tools. They are (surprisingly) the best. I can't say as much for the camcorders. ...

First, this "3CCD" thing is a joke! Panasonic puts the tiniest CCD chips - which feel like grains of sand when you actually view the footage - into their camcorders and hype it as something better. I've seen Panasonic camcorders with a SINGLE CCD chip provide much better color-rendering and contrast than the (so-called) "3CCD" models. That's a side-by-side comparison of camcorders from the same company!

Second, I had my PV-GS150 for about a year, and it took passable footage (in spite of the poor color rendering and contrast). Then, suddenly, the focus went haywire. Both the "auto-focus" and the manual focus no longer hold. The image blurs in and out of focus. This is not an isolated experience, either. Check the online experiences of others and you will find this issue mentioned. The camcorder becomes useless and the "support" charges $261 (flat rate) to fix any hardware issue that is more than a year old!

So, now I have a camcorder that is barely 15 months old and can't be used because the focus won't hold in either mode. ... anyone interested in buying lenses and filters, camera bag, and accessories?!? ... because at least $300 of my investment just became junk!!

"Worked great for two years and then..." 2009-07-25

I bought this model in May of 2007. It worked exceptionally well for two years. Transferred footage with no problem to the computer and it's been great to have.

It is now July of 2009 and two weeks ago I started to get a burnt out pixel in my recordings. I first thought it was the video display, but upon transfer it is burnt into the recording as well.

It pretty much kills the family footage because you tend to just stare at the darn thing. When I do zoom to the digital level the red dot moves off screen, but I don't see myself doing that for my recordings.

So, it's worked good for 3 years, but it has no longevity I think as is the case with electronics these days.

I had an 80's betamax and 80's VHS and those lasted almost 20 years...

I have had multiple issues with this camcorder. It was used a total of less than 60 minutes and then put away for several months (inside the air-conditioned house). Now the screen no longer works; it won't record videos; and the DV connector to transfer what little footage I have doesn't recognize the camera. I bought a replacement camcorder to get the footage off the film and it transferred easily -- so it isn't an issue with the computer or software.

I will not purchase another JVC camcorder as they want more to repair this one than it costs to purchase a new one.

I've only had the JVC GR-D771(U) for about 3 hours and I'm already sold that this is the model for my family! There's still plenty of time to discover the quirks of this device, but at this present time I only have positives to say. First off, the A/C adapter is dual voltage. That's an absolute must if your traveling (or stationed) overseas. The camcorder comes with a USB cord in the box, BUT also has a firewire port that can be utilized to transfer video to a computer or recording device. It's extremely easy to use (which in most cases means limited capabilities)EXCEPT in this case...

*it's got wind noise cancellation,

*a stability feature (called DIS, but I don't know what it stands for)which comes in handy when your using 900X digital zoom

*16:9/4:3 formating

*270 degree rotating LCD so you can see what you look like while recording

*2 or 4 channel stereo sound recording

*a blinding LED to illuminate subjects in the dark (there's also a night recording option but I haven't tested that yet)

*you also have the sweet ability of dubbing images from the miniDV tape to the SD/MMC in playback mode

*There's B/W, sepia, strobe, and mirror options as well as fade in/out effects

* You can also use this as a webcam with at least windows messenger, I haven't tried yahoo or aim...sorry

I'd say the only bad thing about the JVC GR-D771(U) camcorder is that there isn't enough time in the day to play with it!

"Flawed Camcorder" 2007-12-18

I bought this camera as my first intro into recording videos for my family, since I've just had my firstborn son.

The first problem with this camera its is buggy Firewire performance, when I try to upload videos to my computer I can see the video and FF or RW the tape but play and stop don't work from the computer so I have to manually control the camera to capture video. Mind you I have tried it with two different firewire card/cable combination.

The worst part is that the Menu button stopped working after two months, I have recorded only 30 minutes of footage with the camera and the menu button does not work. As another reviewer stated, if you remove the battery for some time, 2 days in my case, the menu button works again for about 5 minutes and then dies again.

JVC support is nonexistent, if you email them they replay that they will contact you in 5 days, which it didn't happen, there is no firmware/software updates for the camera, and if you think you'll find much information on the net about it, think again. And as I don't live in the US, I'm stuck with the faulty camera since there is no place I can take it here.

My advice, don't buy this camera, it will save you all the trouble, and you know JVC won't be getting my money again, should have gone with a Panasonic or a Sony one, lesson learned.

I just wanted to get a camera that I could use for YouTube videos and to take decent pictures. I'm not asking for much, and I'm not a videophile. But this camera failed to meet even my low expectations. The photos look faded and grainy, even in bright light, and have that odd digital look. The video, too, is grainy and faded.

And perhaps most frustrating is the very narrow field of vision. Even standing on my porch looking down I had trouble capturing people in the front yard. This may not sound like much, but trust me, it's incredibly frustrating. You know when you start to take a portrait of something and realize you're not zoomed out all the way? Imagine that the lens is broken and can't zoom out, so instead you have step back several paces. This gets very old after a short time.

There's significant shutter lag, also, and the zoom is very slow.

This camera could be so cool if only the video and pictures were better, and the lens were improved with a much wider field of vision. The flaws on this camera are few, but fatal. I can only give it one star.

I have this camera from july 15th and only could say that it was the best buy in a lot of time. I'm not proffesional, only need a camera for good quality pictures and video, only for home use, and the results are more than I've expected. Easy to carry, easy to use, just a few buttoms, and of course I've bought an extra battery so during my last trip I had much more time for videos and pictures.

Nothing to say, it was the best buy for the best price.

I have used this camera for 9 months now and I like it more and more. I get excellent movies. I have made 8 2 hour movies from around the world. My friends and I enjoy watching them on our 50 inch flat screen TV. The result is amazing from such a tiny camera. Indoor pictures as well as outdoor pictures have the quality of professional films on the TV. My Hawaii movies showed excellent quality of the Hula dancing even taken in very poor light. It is very easy to handle. The only negative I found so far is if I zoom fast it seems to lose focus for half a second or so. This camera has so many features that it takes a while to grow into.

Yes, iso 400 and above looks like mud, lens is not wide enough, image stabilization is bad and blur's your video, yes you can hear zoom in/out noise, camera zoom is not sensitive, menus sucks, lens cap is a poor desing.

But this camera is small, you can hide this camera in your hands and take nice movies with it and no one will notice that you are actually shooting. That way you can catch people naturally,

if people see you that you are shooting a video, they act differently and I it's not really capturing the moment.

I think this is the best camera for that and I all ways carrying with me because you never know when you are going to catch the best moment. Put it in your pocket and you all set.

There is no other camera is that small, even nice HD small canons require a camera bag.

Video quality is good, HD movies are like real HD 720p with on iso 50 and 100. if you properly set it you can take amazing videos. You need nice light sources. Your lens is pretty small that's why it can get more lights in to the sensor, you know you can't get both.

at least not right now, maybe in future.

Make sure set your shortcuts and use them, autofocus lock and iso are the best shortcuts.

I didn't recommended this camera to my brother because he don't like adjusting his camera based on the light or the environment, he likes auto mode, if you like using the auto mode and forget about anything else, don't buy this camera.

but if you know photographing and how to adjust iso, aperture, shooter speed, buy it now. You will love it.

I paid 160 and get the used one, it has scratches but works great and I love it.

"Poor video with any kind of motion" 2010-01-24

I bought this camera last year and returned it several days later because the video quality was so poor. If you were moving at all while you were shooting, the video it produced was blurry to the point where it make your eyes water to watch it. The shape also made it awkward to hold. The Sanyo VPC-E1 and VPC-E2 take much better video, but the VPC-E1 I owned crapped out after 13 months and the VPC-E2 crapped out after 4 months. I have owned several waterproof Olympus Stylus cameras and they are a bit more durable, but the video quality isn't great - the colors are a bit dull, but they do a better job with motion than this Panasonic! The Panasonic video does have nice color, and the video quality is good if you stand very still or use a tripod...but come on, who can do that all the time? Canon, Fuji and Pentax also make decent waterproof cameras, so consider them as well, however, they are oriented toward still pics, but can take reasonable video. In my opinion, NONE of the companies make a truly durable, truly waterproof, digital video camera...yet.

I took this white water rafting, and it held up like a champ. It doesn't shoot very crisp video, and considering the bright sun, conditions were pretty ideal, but the results were far from. The thing is though, that doesn't really matter. If you want to shoot decent video, buy a decent video camera. This thing, on the other hand, is waterproof! And extremely so! I don't know if you've ever been white water rafting, but it can get pretty brutal, and after getting completely submerged more than once, and bounced around a few times as well, the unit still looks and performs as good as new. I'm very, very impressed with its build quality. I give 4 stars because I'm not very impressed with its image quality.

If you need something you can abuse, this is your camera; it'll take it. If you need something which will produce impressive video, buy something else. And be careful with it.

This is by far one of the biggest rip-offs in cameras today. The guts inside this camera were high tech in the year 1999. Video is serviceable at best and the stills it takes aren't even 1MP. For god sakes cell phones take better pictures then this thing. The original iphone takes better stills.

If you just want this for video then get one of the many better underwater video cameras out there. There are plenty of good ones to choose from and they are all cheaper then this piece of junk.

Just to show you how bad it is [...]refused to do a review of the camera because it was so bad and way overpriced. They said it didn't even deserve to be reviewed, and after playing with one myself I have to agree. Its sad because panasonic makes so decent cameras, but they gave the engineers the day off on this one....avoid at all costs!!!!

I just bought this camcorder and read a number of reviews on it. Mostly good, but some not so good. So when I bought it I made sure I could return it if it didn't meet my expectations. Well, I was presently surprised and estatic when all my audio and video needs were met with this great, compact camcorder. Yes, I can slip it in my pocket. Picture quality was great, with zoom the stabilization worked well, night shots where not a problem (some reviews noted an issue), and audio quality was fine. I especially liked the fact that when I took still pictures I didn't get blurred pictured (without a flash). I do wish the view finder were alittle bigger without making the camera bigger.

I have not put this camera under water yet, which still scares me abit.

All in all, I happily recommend this camera.

I took my first foray into video-making last spring. I needed a decent camcorder that would work easily with my iMac. After a couple of months of research and leg work, I bought the ZR700 as well as another more expensive camera ($100 more) that was more highly regarded. I tried the two in a side-by-side comparison. It was no contest; the ZR700 blew the other away.

I won't go into all the ins and outs; suffice to say that I find this camcorder easy to use with plenty of good features. It feels good in my hands and I love the joystick control. Every control is quite logical and makes sense. One small feature that many cameras don't have is the built-in lens cap. With the touch of a button, the lens opens; another touch, it closes. Much preferable to having a lens cap to dangle and perhaps lose.

When it came time to making the movie, importing the clips was a snap--it was almost too easy. And the picture quality was everything I could have hoped for. I loved the features that let you program the video for the type of scene you're filming--outdoor sunny, outdoor overcast, indoor spotlight, etc. The sound was fine, too.

I'm sure if I spent $500 more on a machine, I'd notice the difference in quality. But this more than met my needs. If you want an excellent camcorder at an extremely reasonable price, the ZR700 is a good choice.

"Worked for 15 minutes. Canon won't pay for Shipping" 2007-08-13

I used this camera for 15 minutes and got the "remove the cassette" error message. I tried using other tapes thinking it may have been defective but still received the error message. Then I researched the internet and found out that this is a very common problem. Its so common that if you go to the Canon product page, they have a special link to address questions about this error. Canon's website is basically set up to make you think that you, the consumer, may have caused the problem by allowing moisture or dirt inside or by improperly closing the tape door. However, the real problem here is a defective design.

Since I bought the camera so recently, you would think Canon would apologize and send me a shipping label. No. They are making me pay for shipping to their repair facility.

Needless to say, I will NEVER purchase another Canon product again and I will discourage anyone I know from ever purchasing a Canon product.

This is a great little camcorder. The size is awesome, small and light. The image stabilization works really well. I have heard the tape noise while recording, but after downloading video and burning it to a DVD I haven't been able to hear it. The audio is great for the price range of this little camera. I especially like that you can record in widescreen. For some reason it gives your home videos a more interesting look. If you are having trouble shooting inside, which has been a complaint from some, try turning all the lights on in the room you're recording in and setting the camera for the tungsten light mode. Recorded this way, the videos look better than if you just record in auto mode. And although you can't really control it, any outside light coming in really enhances the video quality too (especially the color).

I think this was a great purchase for us. Highly recommended.

We have owned several different camcorders over the years, but this is by far the best to date. Ease of use makes it fun to use. Sony seems to have listened to complaints over the years because this camcorder is quite intuitive to use. The menu driven system is quick and straight forward. Setup was a matter of minutes and we were filming. First we practiced around the house to make sure we understood how everything worked and then we mounted it in an underwater housing and took it underwater.. The footage is great with battery life to spare. Usually battery life is a problem with most camcorders in housings, but not this one. We have used the included memory sticks and found that they are great for getting video and pictures transferred quickly to the computer. The filters are also great for fixing lighting problems. The tripod has aldo been very handy for shooting ourselves in those special places in the world. It has been a very good deal for us.

After a year's use of my JVC GR-AXM18U video camera, which was a gift from my husband's parents, I got the "Safeguard Mode" message that suggests you remove the battery and try again. After a lot of expense and trouble, including purchasing a new, bigger battery, I put the camera on the shelf for another year.

Today is my little girl's third birthday, and I really wanted to use the camera to memorialize the event. So in desperation I did a google search for "jvc vhs camcorder safeguard mode message" and have spent a good half hour reading that everyone else in the world who owns a JVC camera has the same problem, and that there's no way to fix it. The best solution is tossing it in the trash and buying a new one.

I just want to shout to the world that JVC is a defective brand, the company should be sued, and there is an online group attempting to do just that. As for me, I will NEVER buy anything from JVC again, and if I can save a few other buyers from the same disappointment and expense, then that's the best I can do with this situation.

I bought this recorder for a gift (used). It has no volume on it, so I am seriously disappointed...it was DAMAGED and I am sure the person who sold it to me knew this. I am very very very unhappy.

my old camera was getting worn out. i knew i had to look for a new one, but wasn't sure about digital ones. i was afraid that i would need a DVD burner to make DVDs and did not want to store all the videos on my hard drive, because i could lose them any time (you never know when a virus may strike). anyway, i almost lost hope, thinking that vhs cameras are long in the past. luckily, i was wrong. i love this camera! it's very convenient. it has a great screen, so you see what your taping, and you can flip it over to tape yourself! neat!!! i would definitely recommend this product to people like me, who like some things old-fashioned way!

My husband and I bought a new digital camcorder last August, but have never adapted to it, as it is so difficult to view the films. We had owned several VHS-C in the past. This is a welcome return to a familiar format. As expected it is bigger that the digital one, but it is slimmer and lighter than our last VHS-C model.

The instructions are a little more complicated than the last model. The zoom button is very conveniently placed. We have only tested it and the quality of picture and sound seem good. We are about to go on a trip and see the results.
